stride piano (1949)

The arrangement consists of only two 32-measure choruses. Tatums genius sparkles here in the way that he modifies the original tune into a subtle new form. He uses the repeating vamp at the beginning to tie the various musical textures together. This vamp is not part of the original song but by the end of the arrangement, one thinks it is a vital part of this song. The power to shape a song into something new and complex was Tatums unique talent. The intensity of this piece mounts until it reaches a delicate and flashing coda (the final musical statement).
